Besties Of Pop: Blusher Speaks On Dancing, Music and Teamwork

Photos by Tom Nicholas Lewis

Meet Blusher, the latest pop trio out of Naarm/Melbourne who have emerged in the Australian music scene as a force in the world of electronic-pop sound. The fun friends you didn’t know you needed; Blusher flawlessly encapsulates the intensity and freedom of individual expression through deep lyricism that is wrapped within their vibrant melodies. Their music is intoxicating and fresh; the perfect edition to spice up your Spotify playlists that need that something extra. We heard from Blusher on their latest single ‘Rave Angel’ and the night that has inspired this Trio’s electric sound.

PLEASER: We love the dynamic of your group; what is your creative process when songwriting?

We really bring out the best in each other and challenge each other in the studio, but we also make ourselves laugh to the point of delirium every time we’re in a room together.

Lauren is our head chef producer and usually creates beats using our vocal samples, so it feels like the Blusher DNA is immediately in the production. Miranda writes killer bass lines and Jade is a melody machine. We all write, sing and produce, so we do a bit of everything and swap places around the room. We share the same nostalgic deep cuts from 2008, but have such eclectic tastes and usually bring in references on a scale from The Beach Boys to Fred Again.

PLEASER: Your music is very obviously for dancing; what else do you hope your audience gets out of your music?

We really love dance music that sneaks in meaningful lyrics in a way that feels effortless. We hope that when people listen to our music it just feels like a story your best friend is telling you in the club bathroom. We hope that our music fills you with confidence and main character energy.

PLEASER: How would each of you redeem a bad night out?

Jade would look for a pit stop to fuel up on some fries and greasy food, Miranda would bring her own USB to take over the DJ decks and Lauren would go out onto an empty dance floor to tear it up by herself.

PLEASER: What is the one song for each of you that can always change the mood and save the night?

Miranda: Frikitona - Andruss

Lauren: Welcome To My Island - George Daniel and Charli XCX remix

Jade: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) - ABBA

PLEASER: If you could pick one night to re-live, which would it be?

December 7th 2023! It was Miranda’s birthday and we were on tour supporting Dadi Freyr across the UK. We played the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London which was such a BEAUTIFUL theatre, the balconies looked like layers of red velvet cake. The audience of 2,000 people sang happy birthday to Miranda, we all ate cake and drank champagne backstage with the Dadi Freyr crew. Then we DJ’d the afterparty at Soho House and had such an unforgettable night dancing and celebrating with everyone.

PLEASER: What was it like working with Pink Slip for this track?

Pink Slip immediately understood the assignment and injected sparkly, chaotic energy into the track. He also made us this incredible coffee that got us so hyped up on caffeine that we transcended time and space. We went into the session and told him about how we had snuck into a secret Charli XCX DJ set the night before, and how Charli looked like a “Rave Angel'' behind the decks. He told us that that should be the name of the song. He really helped guide us and was such an inspiring person to learn from in the studio.

PLEASER: What can we expect from Blusher in 2024?

World, ready yourselves for some unhinged high energy euphoric pop music! We have turned the Blusher saturation knob up to 200%, and we are so excited to show you these new songs we’ve been working on.

2024 is a big year of travel for us and we’ll be kicking it off in Japan performing at Snow Machine on the ski slopes! We’ll also be touring and going on writing trips throughout the US and the UK!
