Introducing: Chloe Parché!

Eora/Sydney’s very own Chloe Parché is back with her new single ‘Bitter’ ahead of her stunning new EP Bad With Words (one of Pleaser’s highly anticipated releases in 2024!) We had the pleasure of catching up with Chloe to talk live shows, writing music and importantly Foo Fighters. Introducing Chloe Parché, believe us when we say, you’re not going to want to miss her!

Pleaser: I love that you can create really captivating music but have really vulnerable lyrics as well. Do you find that easy to do, being quite vulnerable in your lyricism?

Chloe: I think it makes it easier when the song is a bit more upbeat. It kind of masks it in a way but I do, I used to struggle a lot with writing lyrics that were personal, like any kind of, whether it was sad or not. When I was younger, I even used to make up situations. It was just like random weird concepts that I would just come up, like a stream of consciousness but not my own.

P: Not something you have experienced?

C: Yes it would just be like a concept that I wanted to write a song about. As I got older obviously I was having more experiences, I was like “well I can use this for songs” and it definitely is a lot easier to write when it's coming from you.

P: So the EP, has like just been announced!

C: Literally today (laughs)

P: So how are you feeling about bringing it to the world and letting everyone hear it?

C: I’m so excited, honestly. The last EP that I released was like silly pop songs. Fun, but it wasn’t that personal. They were just fun to write, I don't think that I connected with them on the same level as like these songs. They are way more special to me. I feel like these songs are the first time that I have written songs that I was like, super proud of.

Not like I didn’t like the other ones, it was just very different.
Also sonically, it’s definitely more me because the other ones were more pop and as I said they’re fun but this new stuff is definitely more my style.

P: Do you find that you are kind of figuring that out as you go?

C: I definitely think that last year was a big year for me in terms of like, figuring out what, like “my sound” (laughs) is. For sure it changed so much from like the beginning of the year, last year, to like the end of the year because I grew up like listening to like my dad’s music…like Dad rock” and so when I was making pop songs, it was super fun but it’s not what I necessarily want to end up releasing for the rest of my career or whatever, you know. It’s like definitely evolved a lot since, since that EP, so I'm kind of excited because it's like another step in that direction. And then the next one will probably be you know, even more so. I definitely have more of a clear vision now.

P: Do you find that when you're writing songs that you can bring in that nostalgia of what you listened to as a kid?

C: Definitely more so recently, it's funny because I listen to a lot of different things but if you were to ask my all time favourite music, it would be like dad rock. Now I think that there is definitely way more influence from that sort of music, in just like really subtle ways.

It’s not like I’m making metal, but there are definitely more subtle influences in there that if you are really listening you would probably be able to pick.

P: That’s so cool, that's really exciting. Do you think that this EP has pushed you creatively?

C: Yeah, for sure. I also think that this EP, we’ve tried to take it on a different level. I can write songs but I'm not great at the whole visual concept, that's not my forte. I think I try to do it in my brain and I'll have some sort of vision for it but I don’t necessarily know how to put it into action.

P: Do you have a song you’re really looking forward to playing live, maybe that you haven’t played live before?

C: I definitely do have songs that I enjoy playing live. It changes because we’ll add a song to the set or change the set and whenever I add a new one it’s my favourite. I think at the moment my favourite song to play from this EP is ‘Fragile’, which is an unreleased one. When I’m singing it I feel like people are actually listening to the lyrics (I could be making that up).

P: What’s your favourite moment in a live show? Is there a particular moment that you love? It’s a tough question.

That is a tough question, a couple shows ago I started to notice that there were people that I didn't know that were singing, it's such a cool feeling, you know. Which obviously I am hoping that one day everyone will know the words but when I am playing support shows people aren't coming for me, so that's pretty cool

Or when Miles, my drummer, takes a drum solo, that's really cool cause everyone always gets really excited and he’s amazing so that’s always an exciting moment.

P: Ok, we have a few questions that are a bit more lighthearted. If you could write the soundtrack to any movie, what movie would it be?

C: Some sort of like thriller, something really intense. Obviously that's not like my music but I feel like it would be really fun to write like really dramatic music.

P: If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room, which would you pick?

C: I feel like I have to say a Foo Fighters song because I have a tattoo of Foo Fighters, they’re like my all time favourite. I feel like it has to be ‘The Pretender’ because I’m like a little dainty girl and if I walked in and ‘The Pretender’ was playing, people would be like huh? And I like confusing people.
