Let's Talk to Sonic Blume
Interview by Lindsey Dadourian
If you are a fan of dreamy, indie rock music that you can just vibe to, then Sonic Blume is the band for you! They are a local band from New Jersey who have released tons of amazing music, most recently a single called “Raincoat”. We asked them some quick questions and you can check ‘em out right here!
Q: Who/what are your biggest inspirations for your music and aesthetic?
A: We’re all fans of 80’s new wave music like Talking Heads, New Order, Kate Bush, and Cleaners from Venus, and other artists in the indie rock world such as DIIV, Death Cab for Cutie, and Daniel Johnston.
Q: With the release of your newest single, "Raincoat?", how has the response been?
A: The response has been great, we love playing it live and every time we’ve performed it since it has been a highlight of the set.
Q: How was the process of planning and recording your upcoming music video?
A: We had been planning on filming the video for probably about a month before it happened. We filmed it all in one day. We knew that we wanted to wear raincoats, and we wanted to destroy whatever instruments we were playing. In the back of our minds, we were all hoping it would rain on the day we filmed, but when it came time to move forward with filming, we just had to choose the soonest date we could. The day we filmed was the last day before Andrew went to college, so it was crucial that we finished everything in a day. Magically, about an hour into filming it in our friends Shoobies’ backyard, the sky got really dark and ended up raining. Some friends followed around Casey Marley with a huge umbrella as he filmed us playing our instruments in the pouring rain. After about an hour of pouring rain and constant thunder/lightning, the weather cleared up and actually got really sunny, which made everything feel kind of surreal. We filmed through all of the weather changes and had an amazing time, and it was important that we captured the whirlwind of all these events on camera and we feel they align perfectly with the song itself.
Q: What is your biggest goal for the future as a band?
A: Our biggest goal for the future is to make music that is meaningful to as many people we can possibly reach.
Q: Are you planning on touring in the near future? (When life can resume normally!)
A: We had a string of dates all planned out across the northeast, but we unfortunately had to cancel because of the coronavirus. We’re currently working on rescheduling those dates and even adding more shows, but we’ll do our best to make these shows worth the wait.
Q: If you could pick one artist or band to collaborate with, who would you choose?
A: That’s something we talk about a lot. If we had to choose an artist, Phoebe Bridgers would be the one. She’s done a lot of collabs with artists like Fiona Apple, Conor Oberst, Matt Berninger, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, etc. She’s an incredible songwriter and she has one of the best voices.
