2022 GRAMMYs Predictions: But My Only Predictions are Lil Nas X & Olivia Rodrigo

By: Allyson Clayton

I am not one to typically care about award shows, but I am one to humor the masses and the 2022 Grammy Nominations is all anyone was talking about last week.

I want to preface this with the fact that I know little to nothing about the categories or any of the qualifications--I am a total noob. Going in, this is what I want to see: Olivia Rodigio getting nominated for, well, everything. “All Too Well (10 minute Version)” being nominated for Song Of the Century and, lastly, Harry Styles being nominated for Only Man to Exist Ever.

Sadly, those expectations are unrealistic (as are most of my expectations for life, nothing new to see here). Instead, I am going to give you my “real” predictions for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards purely based on vibes and my own musical taste! I love being unbiased and neutral!

For Record of The Year, here are the nominees:

ABBA - I Still Have Faith in You

Jon Batiste - Freedom

Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga - I Get a Kick Out of You

Justin Bieber, Daniel Cesar, Giveon - Peaches

Brandi Carlile - Right on Time

Doja Cat, SZA - Kiss Me More

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

Lil Nas X - Montero (Call Me by Your Name)

Olivia Rodrigo - Drivers License

Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open

First of all, ABBA?! In 2021?! How did I completely miss that they released new music? Second of all, I am completely torn between “Kiss Me More” (banger), “Happier Than Ever” (I think about the line ‘you made me hate this city’ at least 20 times a day), “Montero” ( I MEAN, Lil Nas X is phenomenal and should win for that music video alone), and “Drivers License” (that had the entire country in a chokehold for months, you can’t tell me it doesn’t go off!)

Final Prediction: Olivia Rodrigo - Drivers License

For Album of The Year, here are the nominees:

We Are - Jon Batiste

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga - Love for Sale

Justin Bieber - Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe)

Doja Cat - Planet Her (Deluxe)

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

H.E.R. - Back of My Mind

Lil Nas X - Montero

Olivia Rodrigo - Sour

Taylor Swift - Evermore

Kanye West - Donda

For full transparency, I only listened to 5 of these albums so immediately the other 5 are out of the running. Sorry, those are the rules!

Final Prediction: Lil Nas X - Montero (but actually Olivia Rodrigo - Sour)

For Song of The Year, the Nominees are:

Ed Sheeran - Bad Habits

Alicia Keys, Brandi Carlile - A Beautiful Noise

Olivia Rodrigo - Drivers License

H.E.R. - Fight for You

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

Doja Cat, SZA - Kiss Me More

Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open

Lil Nas X - Montero (Call Me by Your Name)

Justin Bieber, Daniel Cesar, Giveon - Peaches

Brandi Carlile - Right on Time

Excuse me if I am just dense, but what is the difference between Record of the Year & Song of the Year? Giving this one to Lil Nas because I gave ROTY to Olivia, I play fair!

Final Prediction: Lil Nas X - Montero (Call Me by Your Name)

The Nominees for Best New Artist are:

Arooj Aftab

Jimmie Allen

Baby Keem

Finneas

Glass Animals

Japanese Breakfast

The Kid Laroi

Arlo Parks

Olivia Rodrigo

Saweetie

I am even more confused with this category. Glass Animals….a NEW artist?! Does this just mean “artists we, the Grammy Committee, are just now paying attention to”? Glass Animals released their first album in 2014! Japanese Breakfast released their first album in 2016! What! Does! This! Mean! But, I digress. Ms. Rodrigo has this category in the bag.

Final Predictions: Olivia Rodrigo

There you have it! My completely unbiased and very well researched 2022 Grammy Awards predictions! Are there way more categories? Absolutely. None of them make sense to me, so this is what I am leaving you with. All music is good music and the music you like is just as credible as these artists’ whether or not they are nominated for an award. I wish all of these nominees the best of luck and I hope this review gets me an invite to the ceremony!
