A “Moment” in Space, Time and History: Mercury. Releases Their Newest Single “Moment”

By: Allyson J.L. Clayton

Who wants to play a game? I’ll go first….never have I ever wanted to scream from rooftops about a band so badly! HELLO? CAN YOU HEAR ME? MERCURY JUST RELEASED A SONG THAT WILL KNOCK YOUR SILLY LITTLE SOCKS OFF. And if you aren’t wearing socks, go put some on, and prepare to have them knocked the frick off!!

Mercury. is a Nashville based melt-your-face-off-and-rip-your-soul-out-of-your-body band that you need to have started listening to yesterday. I am almost at a loss for words with how much their songs have affected me, but especially with their latest release “Moment”. In just under two minutes, all of my anxiety is cured, my skin is glowing and everything is right in the world. “Mercury” is the moment.

At my core, I love music in pretty much every shape, form, and transformation. But there are some songs, some bands, and some musicians that have this all-consuming effect on my brain. It feels like any synapses that weren’t closed, are snapped together so tightly upon first listen. It’s songs like “I Know A Place” by MUNA, “Serotonin” by girl in red, “The Garden” by Briston Maroney, and now, “Moment” by Mercury., that send electric currents straight through my skull and make it so glaringly obvious that we are all trudging through this cosmic cesspool together. We are never as alone as we feel.

The music video starts with this overture: “AN EFFORT TO FEEL SEEN. HEARD. LOVED. EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE IN THIS MOMENT”

This song makes you feel all those things, and everything after and in between.

[How long must I wait for me

to come around and stay here in this moment

get my mind to focus on what‘s in front of me

when i already have everything I need a diagnosis

For my head exploding]

It’s in the longing way Maddie Kerr’s vocals pour out like silk being draped, in juxtaposition with the grungy guitar and the drums that make that tight feeling in your chest so unbearable you feel like you need to scream, that all come together to make this song so great. Not to mention, the lyrics are so unequivocally uniting. Life is a battle of man vs. self in the way that a lot of the time, your thoughts are your own enemy and your body tries its best to fight against that. Give in! Give yourself a break! Just feel.

[I just wanna feel okay]

I’ve said it a million times and I won’t stop saying that my favorite writers–be it songwriting, poetry, screenwriting et al.--have this seemingly innate ability to capture a feeling so exactly by boiling it down to a simple, beautiful phrase. We are so constantly overwrought by our desire to appear unfeeling, I think. To appear unbothered and unaffected. What is the point of that? Why is it so unbearably scary to let people know that you actually feel everything so intensely you can barely stand to be alive? The fear of coming on too strong, of being perceived as too much, of feeling too intensely, too fast.

[I just want to feel in this moment]

We all want to be allowed to be ourselves, to love freely and openly and so sincerely. We all just want to feel okay.

Follow Mercury. everywhere so you can say you knew them before they blew up! ‘Moment’ is streaming on all available platforms.
