Dysmorphia by Laundry Day Review

By Bailey Blake

New York City's favorite quintet, Laundry Day, is gearing up to release their fifth album, “Younger Than I Was Before,” this summer, featuring their new single "Dysmorphia."  The band, comprised of Jude Ciulla, Sawyer Nunes, Etai Abramovich, Henry "HP" Pearl, and Henry Weingartner, dropped their moody single last Friday, a month after the release of their previous single, "We All Gotta Find A Reason."

Embracing youth in this new era (check out their new uniforms!), Laundry Day demonstrates their growth with “Dysmorphia.”  They explore something different from what they're used to, dabbling in a bit of rock to match the contemplative lyrics. Ciulla sings of a girl plagued by self-doubt and body discomfort:

“Oh, she's gettin' caught up

In the size of her clothes

And her parents don't know how it goes

Uh, huh

Dysmorphia”

The lyrics are simple and leave little to the imagination, but the simplicity feels more like a reflection of how common these feelings are. Ciulla emotionally sings in the chorus:

“Just imagine if you couldn't see yourself in the mirror

Imagine if you couldn't see yourself in the mirror

Just imagine if you couldn't see yourself in the mirror

Imagine if you couldn't see yourself in the mirror

Oh no, oh, oh, oh

Would you love me even so?

Oh no, oh, oh, oh

Would you love me even so?”

Laundry Day boldly addresses mental health issues that significantly impact younger people, and there is something essential about that, even if it isn't the most profound.  An easy listen like this song is bound to resonate with many listeners, and it already has. Numerous people have said they wished they had this song when they were in high school, which makes us all feel as though we are younger than we were before.

"Dysmorphia"  distinguishes itself from their previous single, "We All Gotta Find A Reason," which feels more like a nostalgic anthem for all to sing along to and wave our lighters in the air.  The band’s exploration of diverse sounds sets the stage for what we can expect from their upcoming album, and it's exciting to hear the experimentation.  Not only is it great to keep fans on their toes, but it's also hard not to respect the band's ability and willingness to venture into new territories with exceptional results.

Be on the lookout for more new music from Laundry Day, and in the meantime, enjoy streaming “Dysmorphia”!
