Finneas Connects with Fans at ‘For Crying Out Loud!’ Tour in Philly

Even with eight Grammys under his belt, Finneas is still playing intimate shows with his fans — and the energy this created in Philly was electric. At a sold out show at The Fillmore, attendees from the barricade to the backs of the wings were singing along with their whole heart to his sophomore album FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!, leaning on their lovers’ and besties’ shoulders.

After an exciting opening set from Bad Suns, the crowd erupted as Finneas walked on stage to a single spotlight over the piano. The set started the same way as the album, with “Starfucker,” and built up slowly until the full band joined him on stage.

The show followed with an energy ebb and flow, balanced between emotional piano ballads and explosive full-band jams. At a moment's notice, the crowd shifted from screaming “Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa,” to grooving along to “What’s It Gonna Take To Break Your Heart?” and pouring their hearts out to “I Lost a Friend.” They were always right on tune, too, clapping in perfect sync or singing echoes at exactly the right moment.

No matter the vibe of each song, one thing was always true: the music felt more alive in person than through a speaker at home. It might sound obvious that live music would make the songs fuller and more vibrant, but it was remarkable that songs with flawless production could sound even better.

Some of the night's highlights were Finneas’ interactions with fans (who had shown up early that morning to ensure their spot at the barricade). They shared inside jokes and tossed hats onstage to be signed, and one lucky fan got the better part of “2001” in a selfie video Finneas recorded on stage.

The emotional songs of the night even had more resonance when played in Philly. Finneas shared that he and his girlfriend Claudia first exchanged “I love yous” here before dedicating the song “Angel” to her.

The second to last song of the night, “Let’s Fall in Love For The Night,” was a clear crowd favorite. And like so much of the set, it pushed and pulled their energy, ramping up after the first verse. But in the final song, the titular “For Cryin’ Out Loud!,” the energy was truly full of joy — a moment the crowd is sure to remember until Finneas returns to Philly.
