On the evening of Aug. 16, The Backseat Lovers were greeted to a completely sold out show at the Grog Shop, an intimate 100-capacity sized venue in Cleveland, Ohio. Having just kicked off their North American tour in late July, the four-piece group is only just getting started.

Leftover energy from the opener, Sleepy Gonzalez, buzzed throughout the audience, eager for The Backseat Lovers to take the stage. For most, this was one of their first live shows since the pandemic halted the live music industry in March of 2020. All the emotions of the past year—loss, uncertainty, and, let’s face it, hopelessness—evaporated as soon as the first chord struck.

To kick off their set, the Salt Lake City natives opened with “Just a Boy,” commanding the room with a contagious energy to which the audience soon followed suit. The same energy carries through their next songs: “Pool House,” “Pictures” and “Heavy,” as fans enthusiastically shouted along to every word, hanging onto the lyrics with every last breath. Not to mention, watching lead vocalist and guitarist, Josh Harmon, perform was utterly captivating. His motions ranged from multiple headbangs and intense guitar strokes, to dancing around with his fellow bandmates.

“Kilby Girl”, a very clear fan favorite, quickly became more of a collaborative effort between the crowd and the band. The moment fellow bassist, KJ Ward, eased into the playful song’s intro, the room erupted with cheers of excitement. Finally to wrap up the eventful night, the band seamlessly slides into their final song, “Sinking Ship.”

And for those who have yet to experience The Backseat Lovers live, it’s something that comes highly recommended as there was never a dull moment.
