‘A Taste Of Oxygen’ Zombeaches inspiration playlist

Jackson Reid Briggs & The Heaters - Waiting and Ugly

JRB & TH are one of if not my favorite local Melbourne acts. We’ve played a number of different shows with them and I have always loved Jackson’s lyrics and vocal approach through all his projects. I bought there vinyl discography and was listening to them on repeat through the entire album process (James)

You Let My Tyres Down - Tropical Fuck Storm

I was always thinking about where and how to  place the female vocal amongst the heavy sound of guitars, drums, bass and forceful lead vocal. This was something we hadn’t played around with heaps but our record has a really nice blend of lead and backings. Tropical Fuck Storm do this really well and this was definitely inspiration for the placement of vocals. (Dom)

Offer An End - Cloud Nothings

‘Offer An End’ by Cloud Nothings, this song was inspirational for this record because of the sound of the recording.. Lo fi, but still really solid. It sounds like people in a room playing live together, which is exactly how we recorded ‘A Taste Of Oxygen,’ also lyrically it’s really deep. Which reminds me of Jim’s lyrics. (Jay)

I got to meet Dylan Baldi from CN not long after we recorded the album. Was a really nice guy chatted heaps, he said to email him through the album. He never wrote back. Lol. (James)

Nabokov - Fontaines DC

Chaos, Harmony & dynamics! Just another example of finding beauty within the madness, something we constantly strive to achieve & have with the whole “ A Taste Of Oxygen” record! (Tony)

The Beauty That Surrounds Ya - Watty Thompson

We have known Watty and bass Player Tom for many a rock n roll moon. This single came while I was writing a lot of lyrics to ‘A Taste Of Oxygen’. I really love the heart and soul that goes into Watty’s unique songwriting, tried to steal a lil bit of this from him. (James)

Interpol - PDA

For me, the driving force of this track (let alone the whole record) is such an inspiration! I wanted us to achieve something just as powerful & inspiring & I definitely feel like we did with “Now In Red”. (Tony)

Mogwai - Scotland’s Shame

I was especially listening to a lot of Mogwai whilst recording, ‘Scotland’s Shame’ by Mogwai was inspiring to use less vocals in certain parts of songs and rely more on the instruments and space for feeling, also being chaotic and gnarly when needed. A real fine balance of both worlds, which seems to come out in ‘A Taste Of Oxygen’ really well. (Jay)

Low - Mark Lanegan

I’m a huge and obsessive Lanegan fan. His music and lyrics are ingrained in my songwriting DNA. As Mark passed away during the writing of Taste Of Oxygen, I was listening to a heap of all Lanegan’s projects across his diverse and prolific career. (James)

Murray-Darling - Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice

Dougal is another Melbourne artist I’v known and seen grow through many musical projects and bands over the years. Was listen to heaps of Dr Sure’s releases and both ‘While Aus Burns’ and ‘Remember The Future’ impacted the writing specifically our album opener “Laughing Under A Beating Sun” (James)

Look The Part - The Belair Lip Bombs

Maisey hooked us up with the contact for Nao Anzai to record and mix the album. So without that it would’ve been a completely different album and who knows whether we would have even completed it without that introduction. I also had a private copy of the Lush Life album way before it got its release. Super proud of how much they have achieved since then. (James)
