Bad Weather chats to LATE 90s
The west coast of Australia is home to plenty of Australia’s finest bands but today we bring you Bad Weather in conversation with LATE 90s.
Bad Weather spoke to LATE 90s about creative process, starting the band and memorable moments.
1. How did you guys all meet and how long have you been a band?
Three of us (Elliot, Zaac & Brody) met in primary school and had been playing in bands all the way through school. We saw Steve who we knew from school (a few years younger) singing in another band and asked him if he wanted to jam with us. He came for a jam and we clicked instantly. This all happened about 4 years ago now.
2. How do you approach the songwriting process as a group? Is it collaborative, or does each member contribute individually?
It usually starts with a riff which we then all work on collaboratively. Sometimes it can be hard for a drummer to communicate what he wants the guitars to do or vice versa but I think we are all pretty good now at understanding the weird noises we make at each other and converting them into music. Lyrics and melody are usually the last thing we add to a song.
3. I really love “UNBOUND’ that you collaborated with Indigo Blaze for! How did that come about and what was the process like working with another band?
This song came about after Levi and Rhys hit me up to come work on a song together. They had the bones of the song and I came in and wrote the breakdown and worked on the vocals with Rhys. It was such a sick experience to work with another band, especially one as talented as Indigo Blaze.
4. Can you share a memorable moment from your journey as a band that has had a significant impact on your music or perspective?
Memorable moment was being on tour with Taking Back Sunday at the end of last year over east. We got to meet some great people, saw some other sick bands at Good Things festival. It kind of made us realise we want to be touring more, and how we can’t take this for granted, because moments like that are fleeting and who knows when the ride ends. Gotta make the most of it. That tour pushed us to work hard and hopefully it will pay off.
5. Are there any particular themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music, and if so, what inspired those choices?
We don’t have any one theme for the band, but with the new EP we’ve been looking at overarching themes and what story we want it to tell. We’ve been looking into youth, and the different stages of being careless, naive, lost etc, that we all go through. As a band we have been through these stages at different times, and I feel like most people have as well which is what inspired us to go in this direction.
