maxime. Delivers His Own Coming-Of-Age soundtrack with His Highly-Anticipated Third EP

Words by Allyson J. L. Clayton

Personally, I like to think that Baz Lurhman’s Romeo + Juliet was made for me and only me, even though my mom is the one who introduced me because she also loves it so much. So, when I heard the opening notes on “wedgie” from maxime.’s new EP mile end (kiss ur friends), I was instantly hooked. The opening guitar riff felt comforting and nostalgic–immediately giving me dreamy visions of a young Leonardo DiCaprio sitting on the beach, back-lit by the sunset–a scene that uses Radiohead’s “Talk Show Host”, a song with a guitar riff very reminiscent of the one on maxime.’s EP. Naturally, I also think this EP was made just for me.

mile end (kiss ur friends), as a whole, reads like a grungy art film soundtrack–with sultry production, distorted guitars and maxime.’s vocals coming through low and intense, in the best way.

Brand new city, no more hickeys

Why'd God make French girls so pretty?

But what's the use to you?

-”wedgie”

Slightly more upbeat, complimented by a punchy bass drum, “mile end” is a stand out track for me. The lyrics are cinematic and paint a picture of a tormented relationship filled with angst and longing.

I’m losing my place

I can’t feel my face

I’m running away with or without you

Breaking bottles on cars

Baby look it’s not hard

I’m getting away with or without you

-”mile end”

Moving to Mile End, a neighborhood in Montreal, was part of maxime.’s coming of age story. He has done a lot of growing up here and is paying homage to that with this EP, aptly named.

Completely self-produced, maxime.’s third EP is a must-listen! Using elements of low-fi along with darker, more emotional themes, this EP is the poster child for the anti-pop genre. The final track on the album, cherry stems, really hits the theme home. It’s the perfect main-character song–listen to it riding fast down the highway at night, wind so overwhelming you have no time to think about what it is you’re about to do…

Feeling petty?

She tell me very

Was it worth it?

Sour cherry

First time for everything, baby

We could give it a go

-”cherry stem”

mile end (kiss ur friends), is out now and you can catch maxime. on tour this summer!
