Splendi Stuns on New Single “Drink You Up”
By Nadya Barghouty
Splendi may not be a sommelier, but the 23-year-old dream pop artist has more than enough alcohol-related references in her sparkly summer single “Drink You Up.” In contrast to her previous 2023 single “Lazy Bones,” “Drink You Up” is lighter and dreamier. The up-and-coming queer musician is based in Philly and takes inspiration from fellow queer female artists like Clairo and St. Vincent. In “Drink You Up,” Splendi walks us through an intoxicating love story from beginning to end with a certain innocent and airy nostalgia.
The track begins with a slowed-down beachy doo-wop melody but quickly transitions to a more familiar indie-pop beat. The intro cleverly sets the scene for an easy-breezy romance song. Through plenty of witty wine puns and alcohol-related references, Splendi details her feelings of falling for her partner. Splendi balances silliness and innocence for three and a half minutes with my favorite lyric utilizing a play on the word chaser as chase her. The track is sonically interesting and utilizes a variety of guitar tones: a little reverb here and some distortion there.
Splendi sweetly ends the track with, “We spent the night and woke up three years later,” implying the encounter led to a long-term relationship. The reference is a nice reminder that these encounters, while momentarily fleeting, can lead to passionate relationships. With only four tracks out currently, Splendi leaves her audience hungry for more bedroom pop bangers. Luckily, we can expect more music in the coming months.
